Curator notes
Smoke is a sensing-domain failure — it degrades cameras and lidar together — and the vehicle drove into rather than away from it, braking hard only once inside. Recovery required a remote operator to reverse it out. NHTSA's top official had just told AV companies to address a 'clear pattern' of driverless vehicles interfering with first responders; this corpus now holds five such records across Cruise, Waymo and Zoox.
