Curator notes
404 Media published 2026-06-01; the takeover wave began around 2026-05-29. The vulnerability arose because Meta gave its AI support assistant write access to email binding and password resets when it rolled the feature out broadly in March 2026. Secondary aggregators report Meta confirmed an AI-assisted account recovery bug affecting at least 20,225 Instagram accounts between 2026-04-17 and early June 2026; that figure could NOT be confirmed from a primary source of record and is recorded here only as an unverified claim. Victims told 404 Media there was no way to escalate to a human. A separate January 2026 Register item about mass Instagram password-reset emails is a different event. Also reported as: 'Meta's AI support assistant was talked into adding attacker emails to accounts, enabling Instagram takeovers'.
